Mike Nixon’s journey with Viking Fire Protection is a powerful example of long term dedication, professional growth, and leadership in the fire protection industry. With more than three decades of service, Mike has played a key role in building and expanding Viking’s presence in Whistler, British Columbia, while helping shape a strong local operation grounded in relationships and technical expertise.
Building a Career in Fire Protection
Mike began his career with Viking Fire Protection in 1993, straight out of high school, joining the company as an apprentice at a time when hands on learning and field experience were essential to mastering the trade. From the very beginning, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a genuine commitment to learning every aspect of fire sprinkler systems and fire suppression work.
Through years of on site experience, technical training, and dedication to craftsmanship, Mike progressed to become a Journeyman sprinkler technician. Working in the field allowed him to gain a thorough understanding of system installation, inspections, maintenance requirements, and the realities of active job sites. These early years shaped his practical mindset and gave him a solid technical foundation that continues to guide his decisions as a leader today.
Establishing Viking in Whistler
In 1998, Mike relocated to Whistler, British Columbia, where he partnered with Richard St. Denis to help launch the Whistler office. Starting a new operation required adaptability, persistence, and a strong connection to the local market. This milestone marked the beginning of Viking’s long term presence in the region.
Over the years, Mike helped build more than just a branch. With more than 30 years of service, he played a key role in establishing a close knit local operation where customer relationships are built on trust and consistency. Clients are treated like long term partners, and that community focused approach has become a defining characteristic of the Whistler office and its success.
Leading Operations in Whistler
Today, Mike serves as Operations Manager for the Whistler office, where he oversees day to day operations and supports both field and office teams. His role involves coordinating resources, guiding teams, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with Viking’s standards for quality and performance.
Mike’s leadership spans a full range of fire protection services, including fire sprinkler system installation, inspections, maintenance, and ongoing system performance. His management style is hands on and collaborative, shaped by years of experience in the field. By staying closely connected to both people and processes, he helps teams work effectively while maintaining a strong focus on safety and execution.
Real World Experience That Adds Value
In addition to his extensive industry background, Mike brings valuable real world insight from his experience as a part time firefighter. This perspective provides him with a firsthand understanding of fire behavior, emergency response, and the critical role fire protection systems play during real incidents.
By combining technical expertise with practical emergency response experience, Mike reinforces the importance of system performance and preparedness. This added layer of understanding helps ensure that decisions are made with real life scenarios in mind, supporting the goal of protecting people, property, and communities when it matters most.
